Famagusta

Famagusta is in the south east part of Northern Cyprus, on the beautiful Karpass Peninsula. Originally founded around 274 BC, it started developing in 1192. It was an important port city during the medieval period as it was a gateway to Silk Road traders. The city’s Greek name was Ammochostos, meaning “hidden in the sand” and over time it became Famagusta. The Turks called the city Mağusa and it became Gazimağusa (meaning veteran Mağusa) after the invasion in 1974. Since the 70’s, Turkish Cypriots have been living in Northern Cyprus and Greek Cypriots live in South.

The best time to travel to Northern Cyprus is from May to July or in September, as the country experiences especially high heat in August. There are no flights to the city of Famagusta, but both Ercan Airport and Larnaca International Airport are only an hour away from the city centre. You can book cheap flights to Cyprus before the travel season starts.
